About Us

Kelburn Falconry Centre is situated in the grounds of Kelburn Castle and Country Centre. The planning stages for the falconry centre began at the end of 2002 and the building commenced on November 2003 and was carried out by 3 dedicated members and assisted on intervals by a team of volunteers.

Over the six months that followed many things were altered including some of the original layout plans to make the centre a more friendly and accessible environment for you and your family.

In December 2004 work started once again on a section not accessible to the public but highly important none the less. Breeding pens, Molting pens, a veterinary area and food preparation area were all to be part of this venture.

We are constantly trying to envisage new ideas to improve the area for the well being of our birds and to make Kelburn Falconry Centre a place that you and your family will always remember and want to return to.

History

The first records of man using birds of prey to hunt, date back to 700 B.C. and are said to have been started by the chinese. It is also referenced that some young princes received falcons as gifts and the practice of falconry was born.

Falconry appears throughout historical references and spans the globe although europe only gained an interest around 420 A.D. By 850 A.D. we see reports of falconry being used widely throughout europe and england.

During that time only hierarchical members of society & royalty were to fly birds of prey and practice the art of falconry the larger and more powerful species going to the members of higher standing and so on. throughout the centuries this was seemingly maintained, however, these days all that has changed.

Falconry is a fantastic sport and way of life to some, therefore most of us involved in falconry have realised that and want to give others the opportunity to share the experience that once was the sport of Kings.

Come and visit the Kelburn Falconry Centre, flying displays daily.

Weather permitting.
